United Kingdom of Sheffield announced that longtime striker Billy Sharp signed a contract extension late last week.

The extension sees the childhood Blades fan staying with the club for at least another season.

The 36-year-old has been with Sheffield United since 2015 in his third permanent spell at his boyhood club, and in that time he has contributed with 113 goals in all competitions.

Despite playing just 16 times last season in the Premier League, Sharp has once again become a regular for United in the Championship and has been a key figure in their push for the play-off places.

FLW’s Sheffield United Fan Expert Owain Wyse gave his thoughts on extending Sharp’s contract and it’s no surprise there’s been a positive reaction.

“Billy signing a new contract is great news” Owan said.

“He is a Blade from childhood and his passion for the club is unrivalled.

“He’s a great role model and a brilliant motivator for the rest of the team, which in many ways makes him the perfect captain.

“He’s also of course a great goalscorer and he’s still the club’s best striker.

“The only downside is that it’s only a one-year extension.”

The verdict

It would be surprising to find a fan who doesn’t echo Owain’s thoughts on this contract extension as Sharp is so popular at the club.

Despite being 36 years old, Sharp remains the club’s top scorer with 15 goals this season and he will no doubt continue to make an impact next term.

You can understand why Owain would have liked to see a deal that ties him to the club for over a year, but provided he has another strong season, it’s likely Sharp will be at the club until he retires now.

Sharp returned to the Sheffield United squad against Cardiff City after a spell out through injury and fans will hope he can now make an impact in their final games of the season and then in the play-offs.
