The Middletown City School District Board of Education has reached a settlement with teachers, approving a two-year compensation deal with the Middletown Teachers Association. The agreement comes after weeks of contract negotiations between the teachers’ union and the school board.

Last month, teachers came together to say they were not being treated fairly, wanting a contract that would support and retain highly qualified teachers.

The two-year deal includes an estimated $2.5 million pay increase for members of the MTA, which is made up of teachers, counselors and school psychologists.

The board said the contract includes a 3% pay increase this school year (July 1, 2021-July 1, 2022; MTA members will receive retroactive pay) and a 2% raise next year (July 1, 2022 ) with a cost of living adjustment (COLA) increases with other linguistic elements.

The Middletown Board of Directors has offered MTA two additional payouts for December 2021 and November 2022. The MTA compensation package includes:

  • 3% annual cost of living increase for this school year
  • Additional payment of $1,000 by ESSER to MTA in December 2021
  • 2% annual cost of living increase for this school year
  • Additional payment of 1% ESSER to MTA in November 2022

“This agreement gives our community the confidence that we can work together for what is best for our staff and our students. I’m proud of this administration, our school board and our teachers’ union for coming together and coming to an agreement,” said Chris Urso, president of the Middletown Board of Education.

The MTA is made up of approximately 460 professionals. The agreement is retroactively effective from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2023.
