PSG want to reach a contractual agreement with Messi before the World Cup

With Lionel Messi in the final year of his contract with PSG, there have been plenty of rumors about his future. It is believed that Barcelona intend to re-sign the 35-year-old superstar to bid him farewell at the club after parting ways on a disappointing note last year.

It has been indicated that the Blaugrana plan to move for their former captain next summer once his contract with PSG expires.

However, earlier today reports suggested that the club had planned to accelerate these plans until January make the most of the 1:1 rule as they would revert to the 1:4 rule from the summer.

While it is highly unlikely that such a scenario will materialize, PSG plan to ensure the sustainability of the record Ballon d’Or winner at the Parc des Princes as soon as possible.

SPORT reports that the Ligue 1 champions are keen to extend Messi’s contract and want to reach an agreement on this before the start of the FIFA World Cup next month.

PSG have already “informally” communicated to the Argentine captain on their intentions to extend his contract. The 35-year-old had signed a two-year deal with an option of a further twelve months when he joined the club last year.

However, the one-year extension would only come into effect if both parties agreed to it. PSG, however, want to put an end to this and offer Messi another two-year renewal which would keep him at the Parc des Princes until he turns 38.

After a slow start to life in France, Messi has turned things around in spectacular fashion this season, leading the team on the pitch and in the dressing room, while his presence has also proven economically beneficial for the club.

All these factors convinced PSG to extend his contract and they want to reach an agreement with him before the start of the World Cup, although they would wait to make an official announcement after the tournament in Qatar.

Messi, for his part, is only expected to make a decision on his future after the World Cup, as several journalists and media outlets have reported. It remains to be seen whether PSG will succeed in convincing him to renew before he flies to Qatar.

Meanwhile, Barcelona will be watching all developments surrounding their former captain with an eagle eye as they continue to harbor hopes of a reunion.
