Gone are the days in club football where clubs had all the power in their hands exclusively in terms of transfers. Professional players did not have autonomy over their contracts for a long time. While they could negotiate and make new demands, players were only allowed to leave when their parent clubs wanted to.
But things changed with the Bosman decision, and suddenly the footballers had full control over their contractual situation. After the decision, the footballers could decide whether or not to renew their contracts. Clubs have also started to become proactive with contract renewals and listening to player requests.
Along with the ability to control contracts came the tendency to sign pre-contracts. A pre-contract is a pre-contract that a footballer can sign with a new club at any time within the remaining six months of their existing contract. Once a pre-contract is signed, the footballer moves to a new club after his previous contract expires.
From the buying club’s point of view, it secures a player inexpensively without entering a bidding war. For the player, it is the assurance that he will have a new professional contract once his current contract expires. Some of the biggest names in world football may sign pre-contracts in January 2022.
# 5 Franck Kessie
In January 2022, clubs will line up to recruit AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie. It wouldn’t be surprising if such talent at just 24 could potentially be salvaged as a free transfer.
With Kessie’s contract expiring in June 2022, AC Milan hope to find a solution as soon as possible. But as it stands, Kessie is destined for a new club, which can be decided as early as the end of next month.
Kessie is a wonderful midfielder who excels in both offensive and defensive skills. He is well known for covering large spaces on the pitch and winning balloons to protect the defense. Kessie will be a valuable signing, and it now remains to be seen which club can land his valuable signing.
# 4 Angel Di Maria
Angel Di Maria is 33 years old, but the Argentine has been the champion of many battles. The fast man has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world and is an important figure in French power at Paris Saint-Germain. However, with the strength of the Parisian club and with age, it seems very likely that Di Maria is heading for new waters.
While on the wrong side of the 30s, Di Maria hasn’t lost his touch and abilities. His minutes have decreased slightly, but he still has accumulated over 1000 minutes in the current campaign.
There have been numerous occasions when Di Maria’s brilliant performances have helped PSG escape a difficult situation. The Argentine still has enough gasoline in his tank and there are some big clubs where he could play a role in the future. By signing him on a pre-contract, clubs will have a world-class footballer with proven pedigree at minimum cost.
