Chandigarh: The Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Lal Chand Kataruchak, on Tuesday held a meeting with union representatives who demanded the removal of the contract system.

Unions have said the contract system should be abolished and the amount should be paid directly to the workers so that their standard of living improves. The Minister assured to look into the matter. “Regarding the issue of changing the basic rates given to laborers, I have already written to the central government in this regard,” Kataruchak said, adding that the state government would also endeavor to provide them with better working conditions. .

End of the Contractor Monopoly: Arhtiyas

Later, the minister also met with representatives of the Arhtiya Association of Punjab who wanted a sound policy regarding the bidding process where laborers and truck owners can also be equal participants thus ending the monopoly of entrepreneurs. “Apart from this, parallel arrangements for loading/unloading at the mandis should be made in case the contractor is negligent in carrying out the work,” they said. The arhtiyas have also argued for an increase in their commission as the MSP on crops has been increased to 2015 per quintal.

Other issues raised by the arhtiya association included implementation of uniform base tariffs per hundredweight within 1-5 km radius, timely loading/unloading, policy reforms regarding food grain loading in the mandis apart from transportation and the abolition of the cluster system. The director, food and civilian supplies, was also present.
